• Collect Important Documents: Before selling your Frankfort vehicle, you’ll need to find your vehicle title, all service records, and the owner’s manual. If the vehicle has a lien on it, you’ll also need a notification of lien release from your lender that indicates that the loan has been transferred to the new owner.
• Sign the Bill of Sale: Both you and the purchaser are required to sign the bill of sale form. This will be filed by the state of Indiana as an official notarization that you have sold your car, and relinquishes you of all legal liability in connection to the car.
• Transfer Title: Next, you’ll need to transfer the title. On the back of your vehicle title, you’ll find several fields you’ll need to fill out. Print and sign your name. Then, have the purchaser sign the document as well, including the date of the sale, the price of the vehicle, and the number of miles on the odometer at the time of the sale. Once the form is filled out, the buyer can take it to the DMV and obtain a new license plate. Speaking of which, you’ll need to remove your license plate. • End Your Insurance Policy: Now it’s time to cancel your insurance policy. Simply contact your insurer within 30 days of the sale. They can terminate your policy or transfer it to another vehicle.
